FAQ

Q: The alternator feels hot during operation. Why?

A: A product should be able to work at temperatures between 60°C and 100°C. But too much heat could mean that your electricity load is too much for the alternator, that there isn't enough air flow around the unit, or that the drive belt is slipping. An infrared thermometer should be used to check the real working temperature, and a thermal load test should be done if temperatures keep going above 100°C.

Q: I have a 90A generator. Can I switch to your 110A unit?

A: Of course, it is. The mounting spots and belt layout on our 110A model are the same as those on the original. Just make sure that the main power line and the fusible link can handle the extra energy. Most of the time, the original wiring is fine, but if you've added any major electrical devices, check the wire gauge.

Q: What makes the alternator make that buzzing sound?

A: Either a failed bearing or a shorted diode in the rectifier unit is likely to cause a high-pitched whining or squealing sound. Bearing noise changes based on how fast the engine is going, and electrical noise can cause radio interference. If you see this sign, you should change it before it breaks down completely and leaves you stuck.

Q: How can I tell if my voltage control is broken?

As long as the charge voltage stays above or below 15V while the engine is running normally at 2000 RPM, your regulator is probably broken. If you overcharge (high voltage), your battery and devices could get damaged. If you undercharge (low voltage), your battery won't stay charged properly. To avoid this problem, our units are tested for regulator adjustment before they are shipped.

What about a lithium battery system? Will this generator work with it?

A: Technically, our basic product can charge lithium batteries, but we suggest using a DC-DC charger or an extra regulator that is made just for that purpose. Lead-acid batteries have a lot more internal resistance than lithium cells. This can make the generator run at full power all the time and get too hot.
